What Happens to Your Trekit365 Tracking Unit When You Sell Your Vehicle?

When selling your vehicle, it’s important to let Trekit365 know in advance so we can guide you on the best way to handle your tracking device. You’ll have three main options — either transfer (change of ownership) or de-install and re-install (De-Re) your unit to the new car or process cancellation.

Scenario 1: You’re Replacing Your Vehicle with a New One

If you’re upgrading or changing cars, you can easily move your Trekit365 tracking unit to your new vehicle. Simply notify us at least five days before the sale, and we’ll send you a online system transfer form to complete. Our certified technician will then remove the tracking unit from your old car and install it into your new one — this process is called a De-Re (De-installation and Re-installation). Transfer fees will apply. Alternatively, if the buyer wishes to keep the device in the vehicle, we can perform a Change of Ownership, update the details on our system, and the new owner will take over the subscription from where you left off.

Scenario 2: You Sold the Car Before Informing Us

If the car has already been sold and the buyer agrees to the device being removed, we’ll proceed with the normal De-installation and Re-installation process. If the buyer refuses or is unreachable, Trekit365 will remotely deactivate (lock) the tracking unit to protect your account and privacy. You’ll then receive a replacement unit for your new vehicle at a once-off cost, and your subscription will continue as normal.

Scenario 3: You’re Not Buying Another Vehicle Soon

If you’ve sold your car and don’t plan to replace it right away, and the buyer isn’t interested in keeping the Trekit365 unit, you can cancel your service. Notify us within 20 working days, and we’ll deactivate the device. If you’re on a rental or contract plan, the remaining balance or a small cancellation fee (whichever is lower) will apply. You may also choose whether to keep the device in the vehicle or have it removed — removal is free at any Trekit365 service centre. For convenience, we can send a technician to your home for free.

If Your Vehicle Is Involved in an Accident

Should your vehicle be in an accident, please contact Trekit365 immediately. We’ll send a technician to inspect the unit and determine whether it can be repaired, reinstalled, or if a replacement is needed. In some cases, the tracking device survives and can simply be transferred to your next car. If it’s damaged beyond repair, we’ll provide a new one to ensure continuous protection. If you’re unsure whether your unit still works after an accident, call us — we’ll run a quick diagnostic remotely. (Warranty terms and conditions apply.)

If Your Vehicle Is Under Long-Term Repairs

Trekit365 units are designed for durability and long battery life. However, if your car is in the repair shop for an extended period, the device battery may discharge due to inactivity. When this happens, we usually detect a “low battery” signal and will contact you. Once informed, we’ll place your unit on Maintenance Mode until the repairs are complete. When your vehicle is ready, simply contact us again — we’ll check  and test the device to ensure it’s fully operational. Note that monthly premium will still need to be paid as the contract is strictly 36 months.

If Your Vehicle Is Written Off

If your car has been declared a total loss, we’ll determine whether the unit can be recovered. If retrievable, we’ll carry out a De-Re and reinstall it in your replacement vehicle. If it’s unretrievable, a new unit will be issued at a once-off cost. If there’s no replacement vehicle, your account will be handled as a cancellation. Cancellation process must be followed.

Commercial or Fleet Vehicles

For business or fleet clients, Trekit365 assigns an Account Manager to assist with all tracking unit changes. If one or more vehicles are sold, replaced, or damaged, your fleet manager should notify your Account Manager, who will coordinate the De-Re or Change of Ownership process. If you lease or sublease vehicles, Trekit365 allows you to create sub-user accounts for your clients, giving them limited access to tracking and reporting features — without needing a full ownership transfer.

Costs and Fees

De-installation & Re-installation (De-Re): A once-off service charge applies. If the original unit cannot be recovered, a replacement fee will be added. Labour is free, and you’ll only pay the replacement fee (if required).

Change of Ownership: No administrative fee applies. The new owner must complete and sign the Trekit365 Subscription Form before the update can be processed.

Protecting Your Privacy

At Trekit365, protecting your data is our top priority. We comply fully with POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act). Once ownership changes are processed: your personal details are securely removed from the system, the new owner will only have access to their own data, and you will no longer be able to access tracking history or information for vehicles no longer registered in your name. This ensures that every Trekit365 customer’s privacy remains protected.
